There are a lot of gimmicks to avoid when it comes to choosing a Web hosting company. Often, a company will promise a potential customer everything that they can, without giving enough consideration to what they can actually deliver on. A very common example of this is “unlimited” web hosting. Why would a company be willing to offer you anything unlimited, at a very low cost? Doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense, does it?
- Web hosting companies know that generally, most people who use Web hosting use it very little, or at all, and that there are times when the services they offer are going to be used more, or less. The hosting companies use this to their advantage at every opportunity; they are promising that space, and bandwidth that others aren’t using right this very minute, to you. That is how they have come to the decision that their service is “unlimited.” They won’t miss it if they weren’t using it, right?
- But that really isn’t unlimited at all, is it? A resource being shared doesn’t mean that everyone can use as much as they like! Even if other clients aren’t using as much storage, or bandwidth as you do, there is still only so much of both resources to go around. They can only deliver a certain amount of bandwidth before they run out; and the same holds every bit as true for storage. They can add more if they need to in order to meet customer demand, but that just means that they didn’t have it to begin with, doesn’t it?
- To put it simply: unlimited storage is impossible, and so is unlimited bandwidth. Since that’s true, wouldn’t you rather go with a Web hosting company that is honest with you about the limits they have set for their service? When they are honest about what you get, they are sure to be just as honest about every other aspect of your Web hosting experience.
